Grandpa's Fence
©2011, 14" by 11", Watercolour
The ancient cedar fence in this painting was actually built by my ancestor, William James, who was the first of my family to settle in Canada, sometime in the early 1800's. His homestead still stands in the Almonte area, and there were so many of us James kids in the area at one time, that we filled an entire country school (appropriately, it was called the "James School" - hmm sounds like a good idea for a future painting!)
This watercolour painting is based on an old black and white photograph of the fence that was taken in winter. I added a few chickadees for atmosphere.
