The Appleton Schoolhouse
©2012, 14" by 11", Watercolour & pencil
I created this painting, of the old Appleton schoolhouse in Ramsay township (in the Almonte area of Ontario) for a friend of mine who grew up beside the schoolhouse, and has fond memories of it.
The school was closed in December of 1969, and converted into a museum shortly thereafter. It burned down in July of 1979.
I based this painting on a number of pictures, some old and some older. I wanted to try and mix watercolours and pencil and give the impression that the horse-drawn carriage and its passengers were lifted right out of an ancient black and white photograph, and superimposed onto a more modern image of the schoolhouse.
